The company goal is to benefit patients through the development of pipeline products so that these can be licensed out to pharmaceutical companies, which proceed to commercialize the drug. Digna Biotech was created as a joint venture between the Centre for Applied Medical Research (Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada, CIMA) of the University of Navarra in Pamplona, owned by the Foundation for Applied Medical Research (Fundación para la Investigación Médica Aplicada, FIMA), and a consortium of private investors, among which are some major Spanish institutions and corporations, such as the Universidad de Navarra, Caja Navarra, Caja Rural de Navarra, and the Government of Navarra, represented by its investment arm SODENA.

Digna Biotech in cooperation with CIMA, the Center For Applied Pharmacobiology Research (Centro de Investigación en Farmacobiología Aplicada, CIFA), a number of Schools of the University of Navarra (especially Universidad de Farmacia and its Galenic Department), and the Universidad Clinica de Navarra, is carrying out a range of activities to ensure successful implementation of research results.

A pioneering initiative in Spain, Digna Biotech is modeled on similar university-industry collaboration projects in North America.
